Cultivating Safe and Inclusive Spaces for All Children and Families

Friday, March 23, 2019 || 4:15 PM-5:30 PM || Washington Marriott Wardman Park, Washington, DC

"What do truly inclusive, culturally responsive Montessori environments look like? In this workshop, we will discuss ways we can assure that our curricula is culturally sensitive, accurate, and representative of our increasingly diverse school populations in ways that move beyond merely costumes and celebrations. You will participate in dialogue, critical self-reflection, and engaging activities in order to develop the tools to create a more robust, comprehensive approach to curriculum development. We will also explore strategies to support positive identity development as well as cultivate the skills necessary to address differences in a celebratory manner."

“Building Liberatory Schools: Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces for all Students and Staff Alike”

Summary"During this interactive 2-hour workshop, we will imagine what liberatory educational institutions look like, environments in which all people can show up as their whole selves and not have to hide any part of their multi-layered identities (religion, race, sexual orientation, abilities, class, gender) in order to be accepted, supported, advocated for, and have the ability to thrive. What are the critical building blocks for truly inclusive, transformative schools?

Collectively, we will engage in dialogue, critical self-reflection, and activities in order to help us deepen our abilities to recognize the ways in which oppressive and discriminatory practices present themselves in the human resource policies at our schools as well as the ways in which Euro-centrism might seep into our curriculum. We’ll be delving into the messy, but critical, work of having honest, courageous conversations about race, oppression, and privilege, acknowledging structural inequalities in our schools and communities and thinking about the steps we can take to disrupt that inequity. Attendees will actively brainstorm ways to ensure that our policies and practices are inclusive and that our curriculum is culturally sensitive, accurate, and representative of our increasingly diverse schools."
